Floating eatery owner appeals to boaters to help rebuild
After Jay’s Sandbar Food Boat capsized in Fort Lauderdale’s ICW in early May, owner Jeremy Lycke is making all efforts to rebuild in 90 days.
A GoFundMe campaign had raised almost $11,415 by Sunday May 22. The goal is to reach $85,000.
Lycke expects to fork out at least $120,000 on a new floating restaurant.
“We want to let everybody know we are far from our goal,” Lycke said.
Lycke served 250 orders a day on weekends to boaters and jet skiers cruising the sandbar, located in the area known as the “Triangle” where the New River and the Intracoastal meet north of 17th Street Causeway.
“They are not customers. We know everybody by name,” Lycke said. “It’s an exclusive small environment of boaters.”
His jalapeno bacon-wrapped alligator bites were especially in demand along with Hong Kong-style pork, clam nachos and other fare. Food was delivered to boaters and revelers enjoying the sandbar ambiance. Lycke saw the need for a food boat years ago when he took his own craft to the area.
“I used to go to the sandbar when there was no restaurant with my own private boat and I saw all my friends out there and I decided to bring food and basically make a dinner party with gourmet fusion cooking.”
On Sunday May 8, the stabilizer pontoon suddenly snapped, causing the boat to sink in just 4 feet of water. Though no one was injured, the boat was a total loss.
When Lycke built the vessel four years ago, he couldn’t find an insurance company willing to insure it. Now, his long-term goal is to open a land-based location in Fort Lauderdale called Jay’s Sandbar Fisheries. First the company has to get on its feet financially, Lycke said.
“We want to thank everybody for their support.” For more info please visit the GoFundMe page www.gofundme.com/f/82rfu-jays-sandbar-foodboat-has-capsized.
