Calling all captains
Are you a boat captain who’s free from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 14? Is your social conscience generous enough to accommodate taking a few kids and their adult mentors out on a fishing trip?
About 50 boats and accompanying captains are needed for the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward 41st Annual Fishing Tournament, which de- parts from Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale.
So far 18 captains have offered their boats and time for the event when many kids in the program encounter ocean fishing for the first time.
“This tournament creates such special memo- ries for our Little Brothers and Little Sisters, so we’re really hoping the boating community will step up and offer their assistance,” said Malena Mendez, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward, in a press statement.
“This is a unique opportunity for our young people we serve, many of whom have never been fishing,” she said.
Retired yacht broker John Weller created the tournament in 1979 to foster enjoyment of the water and boating.
